With regular oil changes, I don't think there is going to be much difference. The other option is to change the oil and let the whole thing cool off like a day before removing the oil filter.

Ish, why do you do the filter that way? It just means the new filter is full of contaminated oil when the new oil goes in. When the oil is drained I carefully extract the bag full of waste oil. If the bilge is rough and the bag might tear, I put a layer of cardboard down under the bag. I make a collar of bailing wire, put a bag inside a bag doubled thickness and drain the oil into the garbage bag. I have used garbage bags under the drain plug.
